The film depicts the story of Clem and Lucas, two average people living in a remote house in Romania. One night they are awaken to scary noises and then they suddenly find themselves in a fight for their lives against a mysterious group of thugs. The film is said to be based on a true story, although from what I’ve gathered, it is loosely based on a true story. Still, it’s quite atmospheric. Scariest use of weird sounds since Blair Witch Project. The whole movie I was thinking, “What IS that freaky clicking sound!?!?!?!”
I was sufficiently spoked by the movie for most of it. I had to browse the internet with my laptop while watching — a sure sign that I am creating distance so I don’t get too freaked out. However, as with many films of this ilk, once we finally “see” who the bad guys are, it’s less scary. I think that even though we see who it is that is terrorizing Clem and Lucas, the film makers intend for the identity of the perpetrators to be a new source of fear once the fear of the unknown is gone. I’m not sure they really pulled it off, but they get points for trying.
If you’re a fan of the mysterious, terrifying force out in the remote woods, this is one for you.
